Prehab: Preparing Your Body for Surgery with Osteopathy
Osteopathy treatment before surgery — 'prehab' — improves strength, mobility and recovery outcomes. Here's how our Mitcham osteopaths prepare you.
What is prehab?
Prehab — short for pre-habilitation — is the structured preparation of your body in the weeks and months before a planned surgery. Research consistently shows that patients who go into surgery stronger, more mobile and better informed recover faster, need less pain medication and return to normal life sooner. Osteopathy treatment is well suited to prehab because it addresses the exact things surgery temporarily takes away: joint mobility, muscle length, tissue quality and confident movement.
What osteopathic prehab looks like
At Osteopath Mitcham our prehab sessions typically combine three elements. First, hands-on treatment to unload the joint or region about to be operated on — reducing protective muscle guarding, improving the mobility of surrounding segments, and calming an irritable nervous system. Second, a targeted strength and mobility program: single-leg control before a knee reconstruction; hip abductor strength before a hip replacement; scapular control before shoulder surgery; deep core and hip strategy before back surgery. Third, education — what to expect in hospital, how to safely move in the first fortnight, and what the milestones look like.
Why prehab pays off
Going into surgery with better range, better strength and a nervous system that already trusts the movement pattern means less deconditioning to reverse afterwards. Patients report earlier weight-bearing, easier return to walking, less post-operative stiffness and a clearer sense of control through the recovery process. Prehab is not a luxury — it's arguably the highest-value phase of your entire rehab journey.
When to start
Ideally 6–12 weeks before your surgery, but even two or three sessions in the fortnight leading up to the operation are worthwhile. If you have a surgery on the horizon, book an osteopathic assessment and we'll build a prehab plan that dovetails with your surgeon's protocol.
