Osteopathy After a Knee Arthroscopy: A Rehab Guide
How osteopathy treatment helps you recover fully after a knee arthroscopy — settling the joint, restoring strength and preventing recurrence.
A 'small' surgery, still worth rehabbing
Knee arthroscopy — a keyhole procedure often used for meniscal trims, loose bodies or joint clean-ups — is frequently described as minor. Recovery is quick compared with reconstruction, but 'quick' isn't the same as 'automatic.' Without proper rehabilitation, patients often report the knee never quite feels the same: it aches with hills, catches with squats or grumbles at the end of a long day. Osteopathy treatment closes that gap.
Early phase (weeks 0–2)
Focus is on settling swelling, protecting the joint, and keeping the surrounding regions supple. Our Mitcham osteopaths use gentle soft-tissue work around the calf, quadriceps and hip, along with mobility work for the ankle and lumbar spine that will inevitably stiffen from an altered gait. Early activation of the quadriceps is prioritised — the muscle switches off remarkably quickly after any knee surgery.
Middle phase (weeks 2–6)
Once the surgeon clears normal loading, we progress hands-on treatment and rehabilitation together. Deeper soft-tissue work through the thigh and calf, joint mobilisation for the knee and neighbouring joints, and a graded strength program — bridges, step-ups, wall squats, single-leg balance and lunges. Cardiovascular work returns via bike and pool.
Return to activity
Most patients are running by 6–8 weeks and back to full sport by 10–12 weeks, depending on the procedure and the state of the joint. Skipping rehab is the single biggest reason people end up back on the surgeon's list years later — do it once, do it properly.
