The recovery challenge

Total hip replacement is one of the most successful operations in modern medicine, but recovery isn't automatic. The joint itself is new; the surrounding tissues, gait pattern and confidence are not. Most patients walk within 24 hours, are off crutches within 4–6 weeks, and reach full recovery around the 3–6 month mark. Osteopathy treatment plays a valuable role from the second week onward, once your surgeon has cleared hands-on care.

How osteopathy helps

Our Mitcham osteopaths focus on three fronts. First, restoring symmetrical movement — the hip, pelvis and lumbar spine must relearn how to share load. Gentle soft-tissue work around the glutes, TFL, adductors and quadratus lumborum reduces the protective guarding that follows any surgery. Second, mobility of the surrounding regions: the opposite hip, the low back and the mid-back all stiffen as you compensate on crutches, and freeing these up prevents secondary pain. Third, scar and fascial management around the incision once fully healed — improving glide and reducing pull on nearby tissues.

Rehabilitation exercises

Alongside hands-on care we build a graded strength program: glute activation, standing hip abduction, sit-to-stand, step-ups, single-leg balance and eventually loaded patterns like hip hinges and split squats. We honour surgical precautions (posterior vs anterior approach) and progress you at the pace your tissues actually tolerate.

What good recovery looks like

By 6 weeks, walking without aids and comfortable stairs. By 3 months, longer walks and return to golf, gardening or gentle cycling. By 6 months, most patients are back to the activities they love — often better than they've felt in years.
